Our Facility
My Friend’s Place is located at the First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex Street in Bangor, Maine. The program is held in the Fireside Room.
Our facility is handicap accessible.
My Friend’s Place is a nonprofit adult social program designed to:
- Offer participants theme-based social and recreational opportunities
- Provide respite to family members who are caring at home for a relative with memory loss or confusion from Alzheimer’s or related memory disorders.
- Use trained and sensitive staff and volunteers as providers of care in a supportive setting
The program includes socialization, physical exercise routines, as well as activities that involve a variety of fine motor skills. Emphasis is on interactions that engage the mind and body in ways that enhance and encourage retention of skills each person has at the moment.
The overall goal is to provide a welcoming, fun environment where people can be comfortable with their peers.
Our History
In the late 1990’s, the Mission Committee of First United Methodist Church, Bangor, ME recognized a need in the community for a social adult day care respite center. Presently, there are adult day health service programs offered at local inpatient facilities. The committee felt that an adult day care center should be located in a place where people normally go for socialization and other events.
